In the near future a brand new Cruiserweight division is coming to WWE Raw. This announcement has caused a great deal of debate amongst WWE fans. Following the mishandling of the previous cruiserweight and light heavyweight divisions, many fans are sceptical.
Consequently, fans are already speculating that this new division is doomed to fail. Here is why it shouldn’t fail and why we have a reason to be optimistic.
So far the Cruiserweight Classic has been fantastic
The WWE Cruiserweight Classic, airing every Wednesday night on the WWE Network, thus far has been fantastic. The talent on display in the CWC has given fans a taste of what is still to come.
The final match of Round One is potentially a candidate for match of the year. Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa fought in a brutal, hard hitting encounter. It was a testament to how much cruiserweight wrestling has evolved. Given the opportunity both stars could shine on Raw. Previously the division relied too heavily on the wrestlers to pop the crowd with high flying spots. Furthermore, the emphasis is now on technical wrestling as well as high flying manoeuvres.
Gargano and Ciampa weren’t the only stars to impress. The likes of Kota Ibushi, Jack Gallagher, Gran Metalik, Rich Swann and Cedric Alexander also impressed. The possibility of seeing these stars on Raw is a mouth-watering prospect.
Established stars are already on the main roster
Not only are there competitors in the CWC that can make an impact on Raw, there are also a few established stars on the main roster. Neville could be the top face of the division. He is already recognizable to the casual WWE fan and is popular enough to lead the new division.
There are a few athletes on the independent scene who could be signed to compete in the division. Rumours circulating suggest that Ricochet will sign with the WWE. Also an international star such as Will Ospreay is no doubt on WWE’s radar. Should they sign, they could take the division to new heights.
In conclusion, it is understandable why some fans are pessimistic about introducing a cruiserweight division to Raw. Past failures aside, if the WWE has learned from its mistakes the division can prosper.
