This week saw the debut of WWE’s new show 205 Live. The show is an hour long weekly special focussing on the cruiserweight division. In just one episode WWE managed to showcase the talent much better than they had previously on Raw. It beggars belief why WWE didn’t introduce their new superstars with the video packages we saw on 205 Live. A little back story helps fans connect. On Raw all we get are randomly thrown together matches designed to fill air time. The talent deserve a lot more and it looks like they’ll get it.
More ring time means more connection
There were three matches featured on the premiere of 205 Live. These matches introduced The Bollywood Boyz and Jack Gallagher to the division. All three matches were given ample time to introduce audiences to their varying styles. For instance Gallaghers’ ‘World of Sport’ grappling style entertained everyone. By the time he picked up his victory the fans were behind him.
If the cruiserweights are given time they will shine. WWE has assembled some of the most gifted competitors in the world. Ultimately if they’re allowed to showcase their entire skill sets they will engage the live audience. One of the major issues on Raw is that these athletes don’t get enough air time. Also only a handful of competitors have even featured prominently on Raw.
205 Live could create new stars
The main event of 205 Live went a long way to establishing a new star. The man I’m talking about is Rich Swann. He won the cruiserweight title after a fantastic bout with Brian Kendrick. Before the match a video package aired about Swann’s background. This package immediately created sympathy. Subsequently the audience were willing Swann on to victory.
Similar packages aired throughout the show. The Bollywood Boyz got an opportunity to tell their back story. Also videos were aired for stars not featured on this weeks episode. Just by showing the WWE Universe who these guys are helps us connect.
There are a handful of superstars who can make an impact on the entire roster. An example is Cedric Alexander. He is such a talented athlete who is destined to break out of the cruiserweight division.
